School

Here is Kj working diligently on her schoolwork.  She is drawing a "card" because she needed to draw and write out 2 things that started with "C" and 2 things that started with "G".

This is our extracurricular science.  It isn't part of school really, but I figure it is a learning activity.  Kj and L climb up on the stool and check out these plants daily.  They let me know when there are roots coming, that the base is turning black on our elder celery, etc.  They have gone out collecting pans of snow for the watering.  The come in with the pan packed to the brim of water and find that as it melts the only have half a pan left.  All very educational...even though they don't realize it!

Kj has been copying verses and such.  We got a new wall decoration and two days in a row, she sat at the table and copied it onto a small card.  Then for school one day she started copying her memory verse.  I haven't started correcting her letters on voluntary writing activities, but we do switch them around otherwise.  In the middle you will see a stick figure of a horse.  Horse and elephant are the animals this week.

Another extracurricular science experiment.  We read that a grapefruit is the mix of a pummelo and an orange, and so we bought them all and tried them.  First the orange, then the pummelo, then the grapefruit, then the pummelo and orange together, followed by the grapefruit.  Comparing as we went.

Giants

Last night, I wasn't feeling well and so while Kevin did the dishes he put on a video for the girls to watch.  A friend had lent it to us, it was mice observing Bible stories.  In the video, they mentioned a man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, and he was a giant, but not Goliath.  So, at lunch today they mentioned it again and we looked it up!

2 Samuel 21:20And there was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was descended from the giants. 21And when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David’s brother, struck him down.

Also at lunch, we were eating carrots Kj noticed the giant on the carrot bag.  I told her that was the Jolly Green Giant.  "I thought it was just the Green Giant."  Well, some people say that he is the Jolly Green Giant.  "What does jolly mean?"  He smiled a lot and was happy.  He says, 'Hahaha, Green Giant.'  (Or is it hohoho?)

Jolly: in good spirits, cheerful, festive, joyous, happy

Do Worms Have Teeth? And Other Questions.

Do worms have teeth?

Earthworms don't have teeth - although they do have mouths that are muscular and open wide for fitting in food. "Food" is usually decaying matter, including leaves. It is softened by moisture and microrganisms before the worm eats it, so teeth aren't necessary!

"How long does grapefruit grow?"  In other words, does grapefruit grow on trees or plants?

A sub-tropical citrus tree, the grapefruit, Citrus X paradisi, produces tart, edible fruit. It is believed to be an accidental combination of the orange and a fruit known as the pummelo. The grapefruit was first described around 1750 in Barbados and soon after recorded as growing in Jamaica.

The following pictures are the pummelo, grapefruit, orange that we had the other day after finding out the above fact.  Pummelo definitely has the thickest peel and toughest skin.  Grapefruit is the tartest...thought pummelo would be...

Do worms eat grapefruit?

Many other links talk about the parasites that eat grapefruit...and other opinions on whether or not to feed your worms grapefruit...

What was the perimeter of the city of Jericho?

Better Than Chocolates

Can you guess what the girls call "better than chocolates"?  Red peppers!  Kevin suggested it and they agreed.  But not only were peppers better than chocolates but also "all begtables".  Yes, they have tasted chocolate.
